Hard Shoe

Teacher recommended – 30 MINUTES

Hardshoe Tuesdays 6:45 - 7:15

Irish dance has 2 different types of shoes. The soft shoes are made from soft leather and are similar to a ballet shoe. The other style of shoe is called the hard shoe or jig shoe. Hard Shoes are made of leather and have plexiglass pieces on the heel and the toe. Hard shoes make a distinct hollow sound on stage. They were one of the inspirations for the modern tap dance that we see today. Irish dancers keep a stiff upper body and have rapid intricate movements in hard shoes. The dance is performed mainly on toes with the legs crossed and feet turned out. There are 3 different variations of harshoe dances including the hornpipe, treble jig and treble reel. Irish dancers at Dance It Out studios must be enrolled in a softshoe class and recommended by the teacher for hard shoes.
